What is a Dementia Care Home?

Dementia is a progressive condition that affects a person’s cognitive abilities such as thinking and remembering. In the early to mid-stages, this can look like forgetting appointments and misplacing items, amongst other symptoms. As a progressive condition, symptoms are likely to worsen to the point where the person living with dementia will require support with everyday tasks or even around-the-clock assistance.

The level of care and support required is very much dependent on the person, as dementia can have varying symptoms and levels of severity. There are a few options to be considered when looking for a dementia care home, such as a residential care home or a nursing home. Both are highly supportive environments where staff is trained to assist people living with dementia.

In a residential dementia home, assistance includes personal care such as help with getting washed, dressed, and taking medicine. For people with more advanced stages of dementia and who require help with mobility and communication, a nursing home is more appropriate due to having access to additional nursing support and specialist dementia care at all times of the day and night.

Supporting our Residents with Dementia at Penrose Court

At Penrose Court Care Home, we are proud to offer Dementia Care by a team of specialists who have the experience and knowledge in identifying the requirements and level of support that is needed by our residents with dementia. Like with all of our care services, our nursing team provides dementia care around-the-clock, using up-to-date methods and equipment if required. Every resident has access to their own fully equipped en-suite bedroom which we encourage our residents to personalise with their belongings, ensuring them a familiar and relaxing atmosphere.

Our Dementia Care is given in an environment that has been thoughtfully designed, from the use of space to the materials and lighting. We believe a care home should be much more about the medical care that is provided, but also ensuring our resident’s overall wellbeing needs are met. We encourage every resident to make good use of th extensive facilities that they have access to. Such facilities include a private garden and cinema room, and our activities team is excellent at including them in our dementia-friendy activities programme where residents can reap the social and active benefits.

We know how difficult it can be to find a care home or service that meets your or your loved ones’ specific needs. At Penrose Court, we understand that every person we welcome into our home is unique and comes with their very own interests, hobbies, and requirements. That’s why our dedicated team goes above and beyond to ensure that no matter what care type they require, each and every one of our residents and their loved ones receive a bespoke service, starting with an initial consultation whereby we offer advice and guidance in determining what the best course of action is for you.
