From Hospital to Happiness at Penrose – RE’s Story

When RE first arrived at Penrose Court Care Home in December 2025, he was extremely unwell and required significant support. Following a hospital admission for pneumonia, sepsis and acute kidney disease, RE was experiencing delirium, confusion and repeated falls, making everyday life very difficult.

During his first few weeks, RE required close monitoring from the care team. He had very little energy, a reduced appetite and showed little interest in activities. There were also further hospital admissions due to infections and falls, which made his recovery more complex and challenging for both RE and his family.

Supporting Recovery at Every Step

After returning to Penrose Court in mid-February, there has been a clear and positive change in RE’s well-being. With a carefully tailored care plan and the support of our team, his health has steadily improved in a short space of time.

By identifying and managing the underlying causes of his confusion, our team were able to support RE in regaining strength and confidence. Safety measures such as enhanced observations, low bed rails and the use of a sensory mat have helped to reduce the risk of falls and provide reassurance.

A New Chapter at Penrose Court

Today, RE is thriving and enjoying life at the home. He is alert, sociable and much more engaged with those around him. He enjoys watching television, especially following his favourite football team, Arsenal, and often spends time in the pub area with other residents during matches.

RE has built a strong relationship with the activities team and now takes part in a wide range of activities, including Pilates sessions and spending time in the garden. His appetite has returned, and he has commented on how much he enjoys the food, which has been a lovely milestone in his recovery.

Over the past couple of weeks in particular, his progress has been especially noticeable. He is smiling, interacting with others and showing his true personality again. His brother has been very pleased to see such a positive transformation.

“Seeing RE involved in activities and enjoying himself puts a smile on my face. He is very excited to be part of everything we do.” – SK, Activities Team

“Seeing his transformation and a new lease of life, watching him interact with staff and residents and seeing his real personality shine through brings me so much joy.” – RN JE
